How to Pay Under Protest
Step 1: Write It on the Receipt
Before you sign anything:
- ✓ Write "PAID UNDER PROTEST" clearly on the receipt
- ✓ Write it near your signature line
- ✓ Write it in your own handwriting (not typed)
- ✓ Make sure it's visible and legible
- ✓ Optionally add: "I dispute the validity of this tow and these charges"
Step 2: State It Verbally
- ✓ Tell the clerk: "I am paying this under protest"
- ✓ Ask for their name and write it down
- ✓ Note the date and time you stated your protest
- ✓ If possible, have a witness present when you say it
Step 3: Get Your Copy
- ✓ Request a copy of the receipt showing your "paid under protest" notation
- ✓ Take a photo of the receipt with your phone immediately
- ✓ Do not leave without a copy with your protest notation visible
- ✓ If they won't provide a copy, photograph the original before leaving

Keep Copies of Everything
- ✓ Receipt with "paid under protest" notation (photo + physical)
- ✓ Copy of email or letter sent to tow company
- ✓ Delivery record (email sent confirmation, certified mail receipt)
- ✓ Any response from tow company
- ✓ Credit card or bank statement showing charge
Common Situations
"We Don't Accept That"
If staff refuses to accept payment under protest:
- • Write it anyway before signing
- • State verbally that you are protesting
- • Document their refusal to acknowledge it
- • Follow up in writing
Paying by Card vs. Cash
- • Card: Write "paid under protest" on the signature pad or printed slip
- • Cash: Insist on written receipt, write protest notation on it
- • Either way: Get copy showing your notation
Can't Get Your Notation on the Receipt
If they absolutely won't provide a receipt with your notation:
- • Take a video on your phone stating you are paying under protest
- • Have video include the receipt, their refusal, and your payment
- • Send written notice via email immediately (from parking lot if possible)
- • Document the entire interaction in your timeline log
What Happens Next
After paying under protest, you can:
